The cast reads like a who's-who list of cool cinema: Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro, Mickey Rourke, Elijah Wood, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Carla Gugino, Rutger Hauer, Powers Booth, Michael Clarke Duncan and Nick Stahl. Let's be straight though, this is not a comic book film you want to take your kids to. It's rated R for a reason. People get shot, beaten, decapitated, sliced and diced. It features bloodthirsty prostitutes, cannibals, a child molester and I haven't even mentioned the tremendous amount of nudity present in the film.

Visually arresting, alternately smug and gleeful in its brutality, the movie entertainingly delves guns blazing into adventures of the shadier residents of Sin City (actually, Basin City, as city-limit signs point out).

The dominant feature of the film is its visual style. Sin City is shot almost entirely in black-and-white. I have seen a few sample of Miller's artwork from the graphic novels. The screen version adds noticeable depth to Miller's drawings, which always appear rather flat on the page. Rodriguez has paid a good deal of attention to the choice of lighting in the film. The shots are bright and dynamic when wrecked cars or bodies wheedle across the screen, or muted in shadow when a figure lurks in the background or cowers in a corner. The black and white is interrupted only by a few splashes of color introduced at choice moments: a soaring red Cadillac, the oddly green eyes of a doomed man. "

Willis and Affleck have become good friends since appearing together in 1998's Armageddon. They had hoped to work together on Tears of the Sun, but that fell through and the plan to collaborate again was shelved, until recently, when Willis suggested Affleck for the next Die Hard movie.
